First Visit

Ideally by the age 2 ½ -3 years your child should have their first visit with us in order to start a good preventive program that will last a lifetime. At the first visit we make sure that your child is comfortable with our team and their new surroundings. Evaluation of the teeth and gums are done along with a cleaning. Oral hygiene instructions are reviewed. It is never too early to instill good oral health and care. It is possible for your child to grow up cavity free with good professional help and dental knowledge.

Baby Teeth

Baby teeth should not be neglected even thought they “will fall out”. They hold the space for the adult teeth and can fall out as late as 12 years. If cavities are left untreated in the baby tooth the adult tooth is at risk of permanent damage.

This is the removal of plaque and tartar (stone build up) above and below the gum line. This is done in order to reduce the levels of bacteria that live in and around the pockets. If left untreated you can expect to have sore, bleeding gums that can slowly lead to bone loss attachment and eventually loose teeth. There are also many studies that link gum disease to heart disease, diabetes, lung disease and low birth weight in pregnant ladies. Keeping your mouth healthy not only helps with oral health but improves overall general health.

A wisdom tooth is an adult third molar that erupts into the mouth between the ages 18-25. These teeth may need to be removed if there is not enough space or if they are growing on an angle that could cause future problems. To determine if these teeth need to be extracted a consultation with your dentist along with x-rays are needed.

Cosmetic dentistry means treating your teeth and creating a natural looking smile. This is achieved by using materials that are tooth like such as composite resin and porcelain to replace missing tooth structure. Restorations like veneers and crowns can not only replace the missing tooth structure that was damaged by decay but they can change the shape, colour, size, and position of the tooth.

Bonding

Dental bonding is a dental procedure in which a dentist applies a tooth-colored resin material (a durable plastic material) and cures it with visible, blue light. This ultimately "bonds" the material to the tooth and improves the overall appearance of teeth. Tooth bonding techniques have various clinical applications including operative dentistry and preventive dentistry as well as cosmetic and pediatric dentistry, prosthodontics, and orthodontics.

Veneers

In dentistry, a veneer is a layer of material placed over a tooth, either to improve the aesthetics of a tooth or to protect the tooth's surface from damage. There are two main types of material used to fabricate a veneer: composite and dental porcelain. A composite veneer may be directly placed (built-up in the mouth), or indirectly fabricated by a dental technician in a dental laboratory, and later bonded to the tooth, typically using a resin cement. In contrast, a porcelain veneer may only be indirectly fabricated. Full veneer crown is described as "A restoration that covers all the coronal tooth surfaces (Mesial, Distal, Facial, Lingual and Occlusal)". Laminate veneer on the other hand is a thin layer that covers only the surface of the tooth and generally used for aesthetic proposes.

Crowns

A crown is a type of dental restoration which completely caps or encircles a tooth or dental implant. Crowns are often needed when a large cavity threatens the ongoing health of a tooth. They are typically bonded to the tooth using a dental cement. Crowns can be made from many materials, which are usually fabricated using indirect methods. Crowns are often used to improve the strength or appearance of teeth.

Whitening

Whitening or" bleaching" is a process that removes the internal stain. Stains can be due to one's genetics, aging or simply chemicals that you are exposed to daily like coffee, tea, smoking, and red wine. A weak bleaching agent is used to remove the stain from the pores of the tooth. Custom trays are made that allow you to do this in a safe fashion in the comfort of your home. The procedure takes 10-14 days or nights after which you will see a brighter and whiter smile. We also offer in office bleaching.

A crown or cap would be recommended if a tooth is badly broken down by decay and a conventional restoration would not be suitable. Also if a tooth has a root canal then your dentist would advise you to get a crown in order to avoid fracture of the brittle tooth underneath. The crown covers the tooth entirely to restore it to a natural form and appearance and protects it from biting pressure. (like a cast for a tooth). A crown can change the shape and colour of a tooth if badly damaged.

A bridge is a fixed solution to replace one or more missing teeth. Teeth on either side of the space are connected by crowns to support the missing teeth.

Implants are referred to the “artificial root” that support the restoration that resembles natural teeth. Implants are small Titanium posts that are placed into healthy jaw bone. During the first 2-6 months of healing the bone grows around the Titanium post. Once successfully completed and integrated the implant becomes part of the jaw bone and a crown can be placed on top for function and esthetics. Implants have approximately a 95% success rate providing no contraindications. Implants are not at risk of dental caries but can fail due to periodontal disease and for this reason it is important to have regular checkups and maintain good hygiene habits.

A root canal procedure is performed in order to save a tooth that would otherwise need to be extracted. There are many reasons why a tooth would need to be extracted. Major trauma is one and the other is a cavity left untreated that has infected the nerve and cause irreversible damage. If left untreated there is risk of severe pain, swelling, bone damage and tooth loss. By doing a root canal the infection is drained from the core of the tooth and a filing is placed to prevent further infection.

Once a root canal is complete a crown or cap will be needed in order to prevent tooth fracture as the tooth "IS" now brittle.

For those patients who are anxious about dental treatment we can offer laughing gas that calms you down but that does not put you to sleep. This gas is inhaled, works quickly and has very little side effects other than the calming effect it is meant for. It can be used with both adults and children and allows your dental visit to be more pleasant. The nice thing about this gas is that the effect only lasts while the gas is on afterwards you may continue your daily routine without any down time.

Bruxism is the term used to describe grinding or clenching of teeth not related to eating. It can go undetected since it is done while sleeping. It becomes noticed when the jaw muscles become sensitive or painful in the morning, when your dentist sees damage to the teeth or when your partner hears it at night.

Cause of tooth grinding may include; stress, reaction to pain, some sleep disorders or misaligned teeth, snoring or apnea. The problem can range from mild sensitivity to severe cases where teeth are fracturing along with major dental work.

Treatment can include a custom fit appliance that is worn at night or alternative treatment options that can be discussed with your dentist.

Snoring is the sound produced when air is obstructed in the back of the throat by loose tissue. In some cases the sound may be soft, but in other cases, it can be loud and unpleasant. Snoring during sleep can also be a sign of obstructive sleep apnea. (OSA) This is when you stop breathing during sleep. This can happen many times an hour during sleep. This can impact one’s life daily form simply being tired or moody to high blood pressure and risk of accidents

Dental appliances can help by moving the lower jaw forward to open the passage of air. They are custom fitted upper and lower mouth pieces and can be manipulated rather easily to move the jaw more or less forward. Ask your dentist if you are a candidate for this appliance.

Lasers are used to help treat conditions of the tissue that would otherwise need to be treated with a scalpel. They are used today to treat ulcers (cancer sores), remove fibrotic tissue, treat enlarged blood vessels and treat gum disease. Lasers allow us to work sometimes without anesthetic (freezing) and heals faster. Laser can also be used along with professional cleaning in order to reduce the numbers of bacteria in the periodontal pocket. Ask the staff if you could benefit from such treatment.

X-rays help us diagnose cavities and periodontal health. Digital X-rays are small sensors (like a digital camera) that fit inside the mouth. The dose of radiation is much less than conventional X-rays which can be a concern for some patients. We are able to project the image onto the screen and able to see very small changes in hard tissue that can be treated early and with less invasive measures.
