Dental Crowns & Bridges Toronto
Dentistry Services by Dentists on Bloor
A crown or cap would be recommended if a tooth is badly broken down by decay and a conventional restoration would not be suitable. Also if a tooth has a root canal then your dentist would advise you to get a crown in order to avoid fracture of the brittle tooth underneath. The crown covers the tooth entirely to restore it to a natural form and appearance and protects it from biting pressure. (like a cast for a tooth). A crown can change the shape and colour of a tooth if badly damaged.
A bridge is a fixed solution to replace one or more missing teeth. Teeth on either side of the space are connected by crowns to support the missing teeth.
How do I know if I need a crown?
To protect a weak tooth from breaking or to hold parts of a tooth together.
To restore a tooth that is fractured, broken, cracked or severely worn down.
To conceal and support a tooth with a large filling.
To hold a dental bridge in place.
To conceal a misshapen or severely discoloured tooth.
To conceal a dental implant.
To enhance the cosmetic appearance of the teeth.
Children may require the placement of a dental crown on their primary (baby) tooth if the tooth has a root canal and a very large filling.
What types of crown material can I choose form?
Stainless steel: These are prefabricated crowns and are usually temporary until the permanent one can be made. We use them also in children on baby teeth until the adult one is ready to erupt.
Metals: These crowns are durable and can take a lot of forces. They don’t chip as they are one solid material. They are used mainly in the very back where they cannot be seen and are required if someone has a very strong bite.
Porcelain-fused-to-metal: Porcelain Teeth are strong and aesthetic and can be customized to match remaining natural teeth. They are an ideal option for front or back teeth as well as long bridges.
All-resin: This type of crown is more affordable yet more for temporary cases while we wait for certain healing to take place. They are not very strong.
All-ceramic or all-porcelain: This is the most natural-looking crown type. It is a good option for patients with metal allergies and can be used for both front and back teeth.
