Therapeutic Botox Treatment
It has been extensively advertised that Botox can be used to help smoothen wrinkles but it can be used for therapeutic treatment for TMD patients who suffer from jaw pain, muscle tension and headaches.
How does BOTOX work?
Botox is a purified protein that works by blocking neurotransmitters (chemical signals) from the nerve endings that cause muscle contraction. Blocking this relaxes the muscles decreasing grinding and clenching intensity and therefore lessening headaches and pain associated with overactive muscles.
Injecting Botox into the muscles responsible for chewing (masseter and temporalis) dentists are able to find an alternative method to help lessen the effects that clenching and grinding have on headaches and tooth wear.
Botox for clenching or grinding may be a good option for patients who are unable to tolerate or unwilling to wear a night guard while they sleep.
