Brushing and flossing your teeth every day, even if it’s done multiple times, doesn’t guarantee that you’re giving your oral health the attention it needs. Cleaning your teeth regularly, going for routine dental check-ups, eating right, and maintaining healthy dental care habits are crucial to your overall oral health.

By following a few guidelines and tips on how to care for your mouth, you will ensure that you achieve the best oral health for you.  As experts in the field of oral hygiene, we want to help you along your journey to optimal dental and oral health, and to do so, we have listed five tips to help you maintain great oral health.

Tip #1: Getting dental check-ups regularly.

To maintain excellent oral hygiene, you need to see a dentist once every three to six months, even if you believe that you don’t have any dental problems. Make it a habit to visit your dentist for cleanings and check-ups twice a year.  A dentist will check your teeth for cavities, bone and gum health, and other oral conditions that only a dentist can find.  Early treatment is key.

Tip #2: Eat a well-balanced diet.

Eating the right kinds of food is important in keeping your teeth, gums, and mouth healthy. Make sure you include in your diet a lot of vegetables and fruits that are high in fiber and calcium. Also, limit your intake of sugary and acidic foods as these could erode the enamel of your teeth.

Tip #3: Brush, floss, and rinse your mouth at least twice a day.

Brush and floss your teeth at least twice a day and rinse your mouth after every meal. Brushing, flossing, and rinsing will help you get rid of the germs and plaque and keep your teeth healthy. Also, remember to use fluoride toothpaste as it will keep your teeth stronger and lessen the risk of tooth decay.

Tip #4: Use mouthguards.

If you grind and/or clench your teeth in your sleep, use a good quality mouthguard to avoid damaging your teeth. These can be over the counter type or custom made. Additionally, use a guard during sports activity (even if non-contact) to cover your teeth and protect them from injury and damage.

Tip #5: When needed, get a dental x-ray.

Don’t be afraid of X-rays as they are a valuable tool. Your dentist will prescribe  X-rays if they need additional information to help with the diagnosis and treatment of oral conditions. These x-rays will help in identifying potential issues, including; cavities, bone health, impacted teeth, missing teeth, and oral pathology that would otherwise be missed just by a visual exam. Treatment will be recommended as needed and long term complications can be avoided.
